How Many Cubic Metres Is My Move? A General Guide
Movers often talk about move size in cubic metres, since it's a more precise way to plan a vehicle and crew than "bedrooms" alone. The figures below are commonly used general rules of thumb across the moving industry, not a Movers Lane guarantee — actual volume varies a lot between households, which is exactly why we confirm the real figure from your item list rather than relying on an estimate.
General rule-of-thumb ranges by property size
These are broad, commonly cited ranges — many households fall outside them in either direction depending on how much they own and how sparsely or fully a property is furnished.
- Studio / 1 bedroom: roughly 10–15 cubic metres.
- 2 bedrooms: roughly 20–25 cubic metres.
- 3 bedrooms: roughly 30–40 cubic metres.
- 4+ bedrooms: roughly 45+ cubic metres, often more for larger households.
Why these are only a starting point
A minimally furnished 3-bedroom home and a fully furnished one with years of accumulated belongings can differ enormously in actual volume, even though they'd both fall under "3 bedrooms" in the table above. Garages, sheds, and storage areas often add more than people expect, too.
Getting an accurate figure for your move
The most reliable way to know your move's actual volume is to share an item list (or a walkthrough, room by room) as part of your quote request. We use this — not the general table above — to plan the right vehicle and crew for your specific move.
