How we protect your belongings
Careful Handling From Start to Finish
Our team uses practical moving methods and suitable equipment to help minimise the risk of damage during loading, transportation and unloading.
Furniture Protection
Protective moving blankets may be used to help prevent contact damage during handling and transportation.
Professional Moving Equipment
Trolleys, appliance handling equipment and other suitable tools help our team move heavy and bulky items more safely.
Secure Transportation
Straps and suitable load-restraint equipment help secure belongings inside the truck and minimise movement during travel.
Organised Loading
We consider the size, weight, shape and fragility of items when organising the truck.
Careful Teamwork
Our movers coordinate the handling of heavy and delicate furniture, considering the available access and required number of personnel.
Additional Protection When Required
Fragile, expensive or difficult items may require specialist packaging, additional wrapping, extra movers or an alternative transport arrangement.
Customers should notify us of any special requirements before the move.
Carrier liability in New Zealand
Understanding Moving Insurance and Carrier Liability
It is important to understand the difference between a moving company's legal responsibility for transported goods and a separate insurance policy covering those goods.
In New Zealand, contracts for the carriage of goods are generally governed by Part 5 of the Contract and Commercial Law Act 2017.
Unless another legally valid carriage arrangement is agreed, the default arrangement is generally limited carrier's risk.
Under this arrangement, a carrier's liability for loss of or damage to goods is generally limited to NZ$2,000 per unit of goods, subject to the conditions, qualifications and exceptions under the Act.
Important points
- The $2,000 figure is generally a statutory liability limit per unit of goods.
- It does not mean customers automatically receive $2,000 for damaged items.
- It does not automatically mean an item is insured for $2,000.
- Different legal arrangements may apply where specifically and validly agreed.
- The circumstances of the damage, available evidence and applicable legal provisions affect responsibility and compensation.
- Liability for damage to a customer's building or other property must be assessed separately and is not automatically covered by the goods carriage limit.
Read our full Terms of Service for how these arrangements apply to your booking.
Before moving day
We Recommend Checking Your Insurance Before Moving
Even when a moving company uses careful handling practices, unexpected incidents can occur.
Customers should consider whether their existing home contents insurance provides appropriate protection during relocation.
Before moving day, we recommend asking your insurer
- Does my contents policy cover goods during a professional house move?
- Are loading and unloading covered?
- Is accidental damage covered?
- Are customer-packed belongings included?
- Are glass furniture and fragile items covered?
- Is electrical or mechanical damage covered?
- Does cover apply when belongings are stored temporarily?
- Are high-value items subject to special limits?
- What policy excess applies?
- Are there special conditions when family members assist?
Separate insurance should be arranged before the move where required.
Movers Lane does not guarantee that a customer's existing contents policy provides cover.
Furniture dismantling and reassembly
Need Help Dismantling or Reassembling Furniture?
Some furniture may need to be dismantled to move safely through doorways, staircases or other restricted access areas.
Movers Lane may assist with suitable furniture dismantling and reassembly where this service has been agreed in advance.
Examples include
- Bed frames and headboards.
- Dining tables with removable legs.
- Desks and office furniture.
- Modular furniture.
- Selected wardrobes and shelving.
- Other furniture approved by our team.
Important conditions
- Dismantling and reassembly are not automatically included in every moving quotation.
- Customers must request these services before booking confirmation.
- Additional labour charges may apply where the work is outside the agreed quotation.
- Furniture must be suitable for dismantling and reassembly using the available tools, personnel and instructions.
- Some furniture, particularly flat-pack furniture, older furniture and furniture with previous repairs, may be structurally weakened or vulnerable to repeated assembly.
- Customers should disclose known defects and retain assembly instructions where available.
- Movers Lane may refuse dismantling or reassembly that cannot be performed safely or appropriately.
- Where this service is accepted, Movers Lane will carry out the agreed work with reasonable care and skill.
- Damage caused by an existing defect will be distinguished from damage attributable to Movers Lane's work, subject to applicable law.
Recommended customer advice
Where possible, customers should:
- Keep assembly manuals available.
- Inform us about existing damage.
- Identify missing or damaged fittings.
- Disclose previous repairs.
- Tell us whether specialist tools are required.
Electrical equipment, appliances and reconnection
Moving Appliances and Electrical Equipment
Movers Lane can transport suitable household appliances and electronics, including:
- Refrigerators and freezers.
- Washing machines.
- Clothes dryers.
- Televisions.
- Computers.
- Audio equipment.
- Standard household appliances.
However, transporting an appliance is different from installing, repairing, testing or commissioning it.
What our standard service does not include
Unless specifically agreed, our standard moving service does not include:
- Work on fixed electrical wiring.
- Electrical installation or repairs.
- Gas disconnection, installation or reconnection.
- Plumbing installation or repairs.
- Electrical safety testing or certification.
- Diagnosing mechanical or electrical faults.
- Television wall mounting.
- Specialist entertainment-system installation.
- Complex appliance installation or commissioning.
Work requiring a licensed or otherwise authorised tradesperson must be performed by an appropriately qualified person.
Simple connections
Where safe and specifically agreed, Movers Lane may assist with straightforward non-regulated tasks such as unplugging an appliance from a standard power outlet or handling detachable external cables.
Our movers may decline connection or disconnection work when the task presents an electrical, plumbing, gas, leakage or other safety risk.
Customer preparation
Customers should follow manufacturer instructions before transportation. Examples:
Refrigerators and freezers
- Remove food.
- Defrost where required.
- Clean and dry the appliance.
- Secure removable components.
- Follow the manufacturer's guidance on positioning and restarting after transport.
Washing machines
- Drain remaining water.
- Secure hoses.
- Fit manufacturer-required transit bolts or other protection where necessary.
- Disconnect services safely before collection.
Televisions and electronics
- Disconnect and label cables.
- Use original or suitable protective packaging where possible.
- Inform us about fragile screens and sensitive equipment.
- Keep important digital backups separately.
If an appliance stops working
If an appliance does not function properly after transportation, customers should contact Movers Lane promptly.
An appliance fault after a move does not automatically establish that the moving service caused the fault.
Likewise, the absence of pre-move condition photographs does not automatically eliminate Movers Lane's responsibility.
We may review:
- The appliance's known pre-move condition.
- The manner in which it was prepared.
- Crew handling observations.
- Relevant photographs.
- Manufacturer instructions.
- The reported fault.
- Appropriate independent technical findings.
Liability will be assessed according to the facts, applicable contract and New Zealand law.
High-value, fragile and specialist items
Special Care for Valuable and Fragile Belongings
Certain items require additional planning, handling equipment or protection.
Customers must disclose items requiring special attention before booking. Examples include:
- Large televisions.
- Glass cabinets.
- Mirrors and glass furniture.
- Marble and stone furniture.
- Antiques.
- Artwork.
- Collectibles.
- Musical instruments.
- Delicate designer furniture.
- Unusually heavy equipment.
- Items with significant sentimental value.
Items valued above $10,000
Customers must declare any item with an estimated individual value exceeding NZ$10,000 before booking confirmation.
Movers Lane may require:
- A description and photographs.
- Evidence of estimated value.
- Specialist packaging.
- Additional handling resources.
- Confirmation of separate insurance.
- Written approval before transportation.
Disclosure of an item's value does not automatically increase carrier liability limits or provide insurance at that value.
Movers Lane may decline goods requiring specialist services outside its operational capability.
Antiques and collectibles
Antiques and valuable collections may require specialist packing and handling.
A collection that has particular value as a complete set may have insurance or valuation considerations different from those applying to individual items.
Customers should discuss these goods with their insurer before the move.
Restricted and excluded items
Items We Do Not Normally Transport
For security, safety and operational reasons, some items are not accepted as part of a standard moving service.
Personal valuables
Customers should personally transport:
- Cash.
- Jewellery and expensive watches.
- Passports and identity documents.
- Cheques and negotiable instruments.
- Share certificates and bonds.
- Medication.
- Small irreplaceable valuables.
- Important personal records.
These items are not ordinarily accepted in standard moving consignments.
Special or restricted goods
Unless specifically accepted in writing, our standard moving services exclude:
- Live animals.
- Perishable food requiring temperature control.
- Hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods.
- Fuel and flammable liquids.
- Motor vehicles.
- Boats and trailers.
- Plants requiring specialist transport conditions.
- Items requiring specialised lifting or transportation.
- Illegal or prohibited goods.
Additional requirements may apply to certain batteries and powered equipment.
Customers must disclose these items before booking.
If Movers Lane agrees to transport a specialist item, the applicable scope, handling arrangements and conditions should be confirmed in writing.
Insurance exclusions and important limitations
What May Not Be Covered by Insurance?
Insurance protection is determined by the actual insurance policy.
Certain goods or situations may be excluded, restricted or subject to special conditions.
Examples that customers should discuss with their insurer include:
- Cash, jewellery and valuable documents.
- Antiques and collectibles.
- Pre-existing damage.
- Electrical or mechanical breakdown.
- Goods packed by customers.
- Fragile glass and glass furniture.
- High-value items.
- Plants and perishable goods.
- Inadequate packing.
- Items requiring specialist handling.
- Items exceeding policy value limits.
Customer-packed items
Customers are responsible for preparing boxes and bags that they pack themselves.
We recommend using sturdy boxes, suitable padding and clear fragile-item labels.
A customer's packing method may be relevant when assessing the cause of damage. However, customer packing does not automatically remove all legal responsibility from Movers Lane.
Glass and fragile components
Glass doors, cabinet panels, mirrors and other fragile components can require specialist protection.
Customers must identify these items before the move. Additional packaging may be recommended.
Pre-existing damage
Movers Lane is not responsible for damage that existed before it handled an item. However, newly caused damage must be considered separately.
Customer-packed boxes and moving bags
Preparing Your Belongings for a Safe Move
Customers should use suitable packaging for personal belongings. Recommendations include:
- Use sturdy moving boxes.
- Avoid overloading boxes.
- Wrap fragile contents.
- Seal cartons properly.
- Label breakable items.
- Pack liquids securely.
- Avoid placing heavy objects in weak bags.
- Keep essential valuables personally.
We recommend informing Movers Lane about exceptionally heavy boxes or boxes containing fragile or unusually valuable contents.
Responsibility for internal damage or missing contents will be assessed according to the circumstances, available evidence and applicable law.
Pre-existing damage and minor scratches
Existing Damage and Furniture Condition
Furniture may already have scratches, dents, worn surfaces, loose components or previous repairs. Customers should disclose these conditions before moving day.
Our crew may record the condition of selected items through photographs and notes. Examples include:
- Scratched furniture.
- Cracked timber.
- Loose legs.
- Damaged drawers.
- Chipped glass.
- Previously repaired cabinets.
- Existing appliance dents.
- Furniture with structural instability.
Movers Lane is not responsible for pre-existing damage.
However, minor scratches or cosmetic damage newly caused by a failure to exercise reasonable care are not automatically excluded from legitimate claims.
Every concern will be reviewed according to the circumstances and applicable law.
Property protection and access conditions
Protecting Your Home and Access Areas
Customers should notify us of access conditions that could affect the safety of moving work. These include:
- Narrow driveways.
- Soft lawns.
- Fragile paving.
- Underground pipes.
- Drainage covers.
- Restricted parking.
- Narrow staircases.
- Fragile flooring.
- Recently painted walls.
- Low branches.
- Weak decking.
- Building or body-corporate restrictions.
Movers Lane may decline to drive or position heavy vehicles on unsuitable surfaces.
We may also recommend alternative access arrangements.
Pre-existing property damage and undisclosed hazards may be relevant when assessing responsibility.
However, Movers Lane does not exclude all responsibility for damage to lawns, driveways, buildings, pipes or wiring.
Any legal liability will be assessed according to the circumstances and applicable New Zealand law.
Weather, traffic and unexpected delays
When Unexpected Delays Occur
Movers Lane makes reasonable efforts to arrive on time and complete services as agreed.
Sometimes delays arise from:
- Severe weather.
- Unexpected road closures.
- Major traffic incidents.
- Ferry disruptions.
- Emergency restrictions.
- Vehicle breakdowns.
- Unsafe working conditions.
We will communicate material delays as soon as reasonably practical.
Where appropriate, we will discuss alternative arrangements.
Our responsibility for delays depends on the booking agreement, circumstances and applicable law. This does not excuse delays caused by our own failure to provide services with reasonable care and skill.
How to make a claim
If Something Goes Wrong, We're Here to Help
We understand that discovering a damaged or missing belonging after moving can be stressful.
At Movers Lane, we take customer concerns seriously and aim to handle claims fairly, professionally and transparently.
Step 1: Contact Movers Lane
Please contact us as soon as reasonably possible if you notice damage or missing belongings.
We recommend reporting concerns promptly, preferably within 24–48 hours after delivery, so relevant evidence can be preserved.
This is a recommended reporting period, not an automatic deadline that cancels statutory rights.
Under section 274 of the Contract and Commercial Law Act 2017, written notice of damage or partial loss claims against a contracting carrier generally must be given within 30 days after the carrier's responsibility for the goods ends, subject to the statutory requirements and exceptions.
Different provisions may apply to other types of claims.
Step 2: Provide Relevant Information
Where reasonably available, please provide:
- Customer name.
- Moving date.
- Booking reference.
- Description of affected goods.
- Photographs showing the issue.
- Available photographs showing earlier condition.
- Details of when the issue was noticed.
- Relevant repair or technical assessment information.
- Supporting evidence of value, where relevant.
Customers should not be prevented from submitting a concern solely because they cannot provide all requested documents.
Step 3: Investigation
Movers Lane may review:
- Job inventory.
- Crew observations.
- Loading and unloading photographs.
- Available condition records.
- Customer communications.
- The nature of the alleged damage.
- Relevant technical or repair findings.
- Applicable insurance information.
We may consult our insurer or insurance adviser where appropriate.
An acknowledgement of a complaint does not automatically mean Movers Lane has accepted legal responsibility.
Step 4: Fair Resolution
If Movers Lane is legally responsible for a loss or damage, an appropriate remedy will be assessed under the applicable contract and New Zealand law.
Depending on the circumstances, this may involve:
- Repair.
- Monetary compensation.
- Replacement where legally appropriate.
- Another mutually agreed resolution.
The customer's preferred compensation amount is not automatically payable without considering the applicable legal obligations and evidence.
Customers retain the right to challenge a decision through applicable legal channels.
Missing items
Claims involving missing bags, boxes or other belongings will be assessed using available evidence. This may include:
- Inventory information.
- Packing descriptions.
- Crew records.
- Photographs.
- Collection and delivery circumstances.
- Witness statements.
- Other relevant supporting information.
Movers Lane will not automatically accept or reject a missing-item claim merely because the contents of a sealed container were not independently recorded.
Payment and claims
Customers remain responsible for properly payable moving charges.
However, a legitimate damage or missing-item claim will not automatically be rejected because payment is outstanding or disputed.
Payment matters and claims will be assessed fairly in accordance with applicable legal obligations.
